Hi everyone, it’s Shelly Kim of @lettersbyshells. Today I’ll be showing you how to create some fun and colorful summer-themed utensil holders. These utensil holders will utilize different techniques from painting oranges and drawing leaves. The finished product will add the perfect finishing touch to any table setting. Let’s get started!
- Mildliner Highlighters
- Mildliner Brush Pens
- Sarasa Clip Gel Retractable Pen
- ClickArt Retractable Marker Pens
- 4” x 6” cardstock (2 sheets)
Step 1: Color Circles on the Cardstock
Step 2: Draw Stems and Leaves
Next, draw stems and leaves to finish the orange illustration for just a few of the circles using Mildliner Highlighters. For the stems, draw a light stroke and for the leaves, draw an almond-shaped leaf.
Step 3: Add Additional Leaves
Draw leaves all over and next to the orange illustrations to fill the negative space.
Step 4: Outline the Orange Illustrations
Step 5: Add More Details
To add some contrast and added detail, draw the inside of the oranges by outlining the orange segments. Start by drawing a circle and then draw triangles inside the circle.
Step 6: Continue Adding More Detail
Next, let’s add more details inside the orange by drawing vertical lines inside the triangles. I continued using the Sarasa Clip Gel Retractable Pen because it has a thin point size for fine details.
Step 7: Outline the Orange Leaves
Next, draw offset outlines of the leaves.
Step 8: Create the Backing of the Utensil Holder
To create the backing for the utensil holder, we will be using another 4” x 6” card stock sheet. Begin by taping down the 2 cardstock sheets by taping the both side edges and bottom, only leaving the top open.
Step 9: Use Your Utensil Holder
Yay! Your orange and leaf themed utensil holder is now ready to use. Add in your favorite silverware and add to your table for a beautiful accent of summer.
