I was enjoying my purchase until the point unscrewed itself and was lost. Are there replacement parts available, I only used mine one day.

I’m looking for a metal mechanical pencil with:
    1. retractable, shock absorbing tip that protects the lead as you write
    2. fully retracts into the pencil when not in use
    3. a twist erase type white eraser that retracts into the barrel when not in use.
    4. that matches my F-701.

I would pay $30 for a pencil like this and I would buy a box of them. The Pentel Twist-Erase GT is almost right, except that it is plastic and doesn’t have a shock absorbing tip. A short, skinny eraser that has a small metal cap to mess with and doesn’t extend is worthless.

Watch out! The medal eraser cover will get loose after a couple of removals and get lost. Mine did. I can’t find a replacement. Nice pencil, it’s just too easy to loose that cover.

    • Zebra Support

Hi Leroy- we appreciate your feedback. We are glad that you enjoy our M-701 mechanical pencil!

It is absulutely perfect, but I had an accident and unfortunately I glued the end of the pencil. Does it have any option to buy a new cap or I have to buy a new one?

Like Felicia, I can’t figure out how to load a refill.
I have removed the eraser and there is new lead inside. But, I click, click, click and nothing happens.

Would like to see this near all metal deigns with a .5mm version as I prefer the fine point for all of my editing/proofreading notes as it does not tend to smear like the thicker leads of other mechanical pencil designs and their leads. Had started using the M301 pens and mechanical pencils several years ago and love them but don’t like the plastic on them breaking as a all metal design would be preferable otherwise. Will keep my eyes open for such a change in the future.

I just got this pencil and so far it’s the best when it comes to comfort and sturdiness. I was looking forward to get a 0.5mm one, but I am just finding such doesn’t exist!
I would really like there to be a 0.5mm version, or even 0.3mm (those seem to be the 3 standard ones, at least when studying architecture). Is there any chance these can become available eventually? Would buy the immediately!

I really like the 700 series steel pens and pencils – the pencil is a bit of a let-down, however. This is due to the plastic threaded section which joins the steel cap to the mechanical components and body of the pen itself. The first problem caused by this union is the loose hold the cap has on the mechanism – it gets loose quite easily! The fix to this is to use Teflon tape around the plastic threads; threadlocker might work, but that might also erode the plastic. The second problem is the weaker structure of the pen caused by this means of attachment. I love Zebra pencils, but they do tend to be a bit fragile in comparison to the pens. The M-701 needs to have a steel cap which attaches in a similar manner to the F-701; a strong impact could break the cap (and thus the mechanism) off the M-701. Such an impact would not break the F-701. The F-701 also threads into a plastic housing, but this is recessed into the body of the pen itself.

Before this sounds like a terrible review, I want to again state that I love Zebra pens and pencils – in fact, I will probably buy some more F- and M-701s in the future. This series probably delivers the best value in writing instruments I’ve ever bought. It’s just the pencil should be at least as tough as the pen.

I have an M-402 Zebra mechanical pencil… How is the WORLD do I refill this dog-gone pencil??
    Sincerely,
    Frustrated Felicia

    • Michael Wacewicz

Hi Felicia. Thanks for reaching out. All you need to do is remove the eraser and insert in more lead.

I love this mechanical pencil. Feels good in the hand, looks good and rugged.
I’m a technician and needed a pencil that won’t break or crack and always ready.
The only reason I did not give this 4 stars is because the cap that covers the eraser was short and always seemed loose. I feared I would eventually loose it and today was that day so no more cap.
If you could make the cap longer (sit deeper)like Pentel’s then you would have the BEST mechanical pencil on the market.

Absolutely LOVE the M-701 pencils!!! I have multiples of them and the F-701 that I keep handy and preach their usefulness quite often. How possible would you guys offer a 0.9 version in the future?

I’ve used Zebra pencils for years. Usually just M-301 pencils, but this time I decided to try the M-701. Unfortunately, I made the huge mistake of purchasing this without reading the full details of it. I should have noticed that it was a 0.7mm lead only. I wish one was available in 0.5mm lead! I just couldn’t get used to the thicker lead. It’s a shame because I absolutely loved the feel of the pencil otherwise. I just gifted it to my dad. If I ever saw a 0.5mm version become available, I’d instantly buy one.

    • Kadeem Myrick

Hi Tim. Thanks for your feedback! We will pass this note along to our product development team. Have you tried our DelGuard Mechanical Pencil? It features a unique double spring mechanism to prevent lead breakage and has a 0.5mm point size.

It is a beautiful heavy instrument but I stopped using mine because the 0.7 leads keeping slipping all the way out (yes I made sure it was the correct lead) everytime I click. Is there some trick or adjustment I need to makes? It is really a shame since I love, love, love my F-701.

Great mechanical pencil. Eraser is almost worn to a nub. Are there eraser refills available?

Finally found one! Only problem is the plastic bit near the eraser. If the outside of the pen, at least, was all steel, would be better. The pencil is a bit heavy in hand, shiny, and high quality, all qualities of a great writing utensil. Even normal woodcase pencils are shiny, too. Would rate 4 1/2 stars but can’t though.

I have not purchased the M-701 pencil with the 0.7mm lead because I am strictly a 0.5mm lead user. Although, I have the stainless steel pen and love it. Please introduce the 0.5 stainless steel pencil and I’ll be the first to purchase!

    • Michael Wacewicz

Hi Sam, thank you for your feedback. Have you tried our new DelGuard Mechanical Pencil? It has a 0.5mm point size and the lead is virtually unbreakable!

Are women allowed to use these steel pens and pencils, or just men? I ask because your ad seems to imply that these are for men only. I have a few and enjoy using them. I just want to know if it’s okay for my wife to use them.

Nice same quality as the pen. Also heavy but I wasn’t too big of a fan of this one. Maybe I’m not used to .07 lead. The tip feels thicker and not that precise but that might just be me using a lot of .05 mechanical pencils. Nice little handy eraser underneath the cap as well.

Good weight and length ( I have big hands) and love the metal body construction with the knurled grip. Wish the grip was courser because over time the oils from the fingers will the crevices and the grip won’t be as great. Great pencil for the price Zebra.

I am using both the pen and pencil at the community college I am studying at. They are very durable and take the rigors of being on the go. Since normal plastic bodied ones have the tendency to break in my pocket. I recommend both!

Best “inexpensive” pen I have ever owned, better than many expensive pens that I own! People who have borrowed it have purchased one for themselves. Do wish that I could find a blue refill for it!
