I’ve been using the Zebra M-301 0.5mm since 1996. The same one. I’ve never had to replace it since then. I’ve used it to fill countless art books. I’m sorry to say Zebra that I haven’t bought more from you other than lead and erasers, but you made an amazing product that has stood the test of time for all these years. Just wanted to say a big thank you for all the amazing worlds your product actually helped create. Thank you.

I used to use this one when i was a child back in the 90’s, it’s a shame they don’t sell them anymore here, i remember there was a 0.9 mm one, what happened to those? and i’m actually searchin’ for a red one, don’t see any on the site. Anyway, great mechanical pencil, i have the best memories with those. Cheers from Chile!

This pencil was one of the best pencils I have ever used. In fact, I have 4 however I lost 2. I felt very bad so I bought 2 more. Thank God for this pencil!

I have had and used the same Zebra M-301 pencil since 1996. It’s my all-time favorite pencil because it writes so smoothly. That’s 22 years, ya’ll! Today, it wouldn’t advance the lead refill that I put in and I’m SO SAD. I’m not giving up on it just yet though. I’ll take it apart again to see if maybe a piece of the previous lead is stuck in it. Thanks for a whole lot of great years, Zebra! =)

The last two Zebra M-301 mechanical pencils that I purchased have failed within the first month of use. The lead advances, but it no longer held in position, so that when you write with it the lead retracts back into the pencil. I have used these mechanical pencils for a long time and they were my favorite.

These are my favorite mech pencil! have several of them. However I lost an end cap (eraser cover) – is there some way I can replace it? thanks!

I was having trouble getting the lead to advance. Finally realized that the small metal tip was jammed up with a v short piece of lead, and that was preventing more lead from coming out. I cleared it out and now it feeds fine. Could be a little smoother I guess.

I love the 0.5mm version of this pencil. However, the plastic stem/grip almost always breaks at the thread and gets stuck in the metal barrel. Happened multiple times. Quite frustrating.

5 stars. Actually, I found the pen while I was cleaning a cabinet. It wasn’t working so I tried to fix it, and saw 3 leads stuck inside, reason why it wasnt working. It took me 30 mins to take the leads out and fixed it. Now its working. Though the best way to refill this is through the mouth not in the back, because it doesnt come out.

I loved these pencils(.7 and .5) till I tried to refill them with standard .7 and .5 mm sized leads respectively and I have never been so annoyed. . . .no lead comes out. It’s not rocket science, so why aren’t they working!!!??? Waste of money and time trying to get it to work.

I’ve used this pencil for years. If you’re having trouble getting the lead to advance after putting it in, just shake gently a few times and the lead slips down and emerges as you click it.
I purchased mine in bulk at Sam’s Club (9 pencils plus lead and eraser refills). I’m pretty sure these will last me for a couple decades easily!
Oh, and purchasing each family member a 9-pack will keep them out of yours. Makes a great stocking stuffer at Christmas.

I’ve bought several types of mechanical pencils and fountain pens(I call them cartridge pens, still.) I would like to know how to properly refill the pencil, please ?
Also, do they sell blue lead in 0.5 mm

    • Michael Wacewicz

Hi Jana, you can refill the M-301 Mechanical Pencil but taking the eraser off and putting in more lead. We currently do not sell blue lead, but I will pass along your request to our product development team. Thank you!

Same story here. I love these pens, but I can’t re-fill them. I’ve tried everything. I virtually struggle to work without them, but I spend far too much money buying them. I’m about to give up because I always, always, always have to buy a pack of whole pencils because they won’t advance the lead. I would love to have a pencil that worked AND was refillable!!! Novel idea, huh?

These pencils have a good feel but they suck and are the epitome of garbage every time I’m using it, ends up jamming at the tip and is very hard to unjam this happens every fucking time like why is it so shit

    • Michael Wacewicz

Hi Paul. We are sorry to hear that! Zebra prides itself on high quality standards. Please fill out the contact form at https://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch with you shortly. Thank you.

I recently bought two of these pencils and I think they’re great but like several others have said the lead just keeps breaking and my pencils won’t dispense led and I’ve only been using them for a week or two.

Is there a way to get more out of the eraser? There’s a lot left in there but it’s at the plastic level – and it sure would be nice to be able to use more of the eraser.

I am also having a problem refilling my Zebra M 301 0.5mm MP pen. Removed cap and eraser, put in 0.5mm lead and I CAN NOT GET THE LEAD TO COME OUT!! What am I doing wrong? This is the third pencil I have bought.

Found and old San Ford Titanium 0.5mm Japan mechanical pencil. Working great, a bit bulky but I guess I will have to get use to it.

After using it for 1 week something very weird happened. The led stopped dispensing, even though i used the correct lead size.

I added standard 0.7mm lead refills to the zebra M301 .7mm mechanical pencil but the zebra doesn’t advance the lead so it is not refillable even though it indicated on the package that it is “Refillable with standard 0.7mm Lead”.

i absolutely LOVE this pen, its comfortable, durable, lasts forever and is overall great, i’ve been using the same one for about a year now and i love it, im not sure if it is intended for shading but it works great for that too, overall im really happy with this pen(a PEN, who would’ve thought a pen can be this satisfying to be worth a review) and i highly recommend it!

I unearthed a Zebra probably from my kids’ high school days. It honestly looked brand new so I started using it. I really like the feel and look of this pencil and have been using it daily, however, when I tried to erase, the eraser has disintegrated. I tried to remove the pieces with a paper clip, but that’s not been successful in getting all of it out. My understanding is I need to remove it not only to put in a new eraser but just to refill it. So, should I pitch it or do you have suggestions about removing the eraser pieces? Thanks!

Love the pencil, can’t for the life of me figure out how to add refill

    • Joyce Chan

Hey Mike, the plunger of this product has an eraser underneath. If you take that cap off as well as the eraser, you will be able to put in a few refills and advance the lead!

By far the single best mechanical pencil I’ve ever owned. 1 pencil has lasted me the past 4 years through school and is still in fully functioning order with all the original parts. As for peoples ‘lead breaking’ issues, that’s really only a problem if you let too much lead out at once and or press too hard. All-in-all, this is a very high-quality product priced criminally low. Nothing but good experiences with this pencil. My only gripe would be that the eraser doesn’t last long at all, had to buy numerous replacement erasers/standalone erasers. Other than that this pencil is fantastic for all your pencil needs.

I’ve used lots of pencils and this is the only one I’m truly comfortable with. A lot of people at my school use it and say they love it as well. I actually lost the two I bought and it just feels weird now using any other pencil. That’s why I’m now on here buying more 🙂 And its also a really good pencil for dressing. I put it in my shirt’s front pocket every day for school cause I think it look slick.

I have had the same M-301 (0.5 mm) for about 2 or 3 years, and I have loved it the whole time. Without a doubt it is one of the best mechanical pencils out there. Refilling is easy, and the top cap doesn’t fall off, it holds firm. The only thing I’ve never liked about any mechanical pencil ever, are the erasers. But with the amount of erasing I do, my Steadtler click eraser is the only one I use.

The pencil itself is easy to hold, and doesn’t slide around. I have wide hands, and this is an easy pencil to grip and to use for hours at a time. I have gone through years of engineering classes and this has held up like a champ. The mechanical parts inside have never had any problems, and still feel solid after thousands upon thousands of clicks. I expect this mechanical pencil to easily last my lifetime. Thanks Zebra!

The pencil that introduced me to the wonderful world of ZEBRA products!!!

I do the majority of my school work with my zebra pencils and feel sad when I don’t have one.

I love it! Makes my cursive flowy and my hand stays comfortable during long note taking sessions! One of the best parts: The lead doesn’t break easily like it does in those other companies’ mechanical pencils do! They’re so reliable! I never thought I could love a pencil so much

I found one of these back in High School Freshmen Year. I have used them my entire life since then. These are the finest mechanical pencils there are and I refuse to use any others. I always get them in 0.5mm. The 0.7mm is ok but I find that the 0.5mm lead looks neater and looks better.

I have also started using the Pen models though I prefer to use pencils when ever possible at work.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE 0.5MM LEAD M-301 PENCILS.I BOUGHT SOME A FEW DAyS AGO AND THE LEAD JUST BREAKS LIKE ITS RIGGED SO YOU BUY MORE LEAD. I TAKE CARE OF THE PENCIL AND THE LEAD BREAKS. PENCILS SUCK DONT BUY

Why is it so hard to find 0.7 mm lead M-301 pencils? It is my favorite for everyday use and very versatile. I like the 0.5 mm lead M-301 too, but it requires a lighter touch, so I use it only for drawing. I recommend the 0.7 mm M-301 for all-around everyday use, at home or at work. Without it, I feel like I haven’t finished getting dressed.
