Thibault Dambrine –
I like everything about the Zebra F402 Model:
– The .7mm ball size – just right
– The shape and feel of the pen
– The fact that the ball point does not leak or smudge over time
– It is affordable (losing one of them is not so painful)
After trying it a few years ago, I simply keep going back to Staples, which is the only store I know who carries it in my neighborhood.
So, Zebra, keep doing what you are doing!
Michael –
I neeeed a 1.0mm F-402
Dennis Metzger –
The 402 is the best pen on the market.
I have used this pen a lot of years over a lot of miles.
Andy Johnson –
Great pens but I sure wish you would come out with a 0.5mm ball point pen.
Zebra Support –
We are glad that you enjoy our F-402 ballpoint pens! We appreciate your feedback.
Jesse –
I won’t buy another pen if I ever have the option of buying an F-402. I would like to order them with my business name and customized. Does Zebra offer customization?
Zebra Support –
Yes, with Gemline! Zebra pens are available for customization and printing at: http://www.gemline.com/us/catalogsearch/result/?q=zebra+pens
Zebra Support –
Hi Jesse. Thanks for being a fan of the F-402! You can customize your favorite Zebra Pen by clicking the Gemline icon on our homepage. Thanks.
Masai –
I’ve kept an F-402 or F-701 in my pocket for the last 12 years. My only suggestion would be to put the F-701 clip on the F-402, it works great and doesn’t bend much when caught on something.
Michael Wacewicz –
Stay tuned!
Beverly –
I have used the F402 pen for years, way back when they had the F 605 which I am down to
only one of the F605 pen and have 6 of the f402 and about 4 of the F301 but since I am 82 the
F301 is too think therefor the F605 is perfect and I don’t use any other pen they are a 5 Star all the way
anonymous –
I have long used your F402 pens and your M402 pencils almost exclusively, they are sturdy and last a long time. I wish Zebra would start manufacturing the M402 mechanical pencils again, because I am running low on them.
Jim B. –
Best pen ever! i have to keep an eye on these because they seem to borrowed but not returned. I wish we could order in bulk again.
Rodney Picard –
I have been using the F-402 for about 15 years. It has been my go to and every day use pen. I always have one on me. For the last few months, I have had nothing but trouble with brand new pens. I even bought refills for them when they were only a few weeks old. It is frustrating enough that I have started shopping for a new pen to replace the F-402.
Doug P –
The new G-301 Gel pens are awesome for writing, but the 402 is still the best pen overall. Please make a gel refill for the F-402!!
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Doug — our G-402 is coming very very soon!
Ryan Skinner –
Great pens. Need a .5mm Super fine option in black and blue, STAT!
Vernon Shartzer –
All I know is, they work & I LIKE THEM! The F-402 is the best baby!
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Vernon. Thank you for being a fan of Zebra! Have you tried our F-701 ballpoint pen? Be on the lookout for the G-402, our F-402 with gel ink, coming later this year!
Joey –
I enjoy writing with this pen, however when writing a lot at one time, such as when i am interviewing new employees or taking notes during a meeting the ink will stop flowing and i will have to change to another pen. I don’t know why this is happening
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Joey. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry you had issues with the F-402 Ballpoint Pen. If you send an email over to our customer service team at [email protected], they can assist you there. Thank you.
Coy –
Love this pen but Walmart never keep them stocked. Do you offer these pens in red ink?
Dave –
I love this pen. The feel. The way it writes. Everything. It was a great pen. Now however, after roughly 2 months of use, the threads for the metal ball-point cap have striped themselves and it is useless. The pen has a metal barrel, but the bottom section (under the rubber grip) is plastic – this is where the metal end screws in to. The threads of this plastic portion have striped themselves out. I haven’t replaced the ink, nor removed this cap for any reason, it has simply pulled the threads out of the plastic from regular use. I loved this pen, but with a design that doesn’t even allow for enough use for the original ink fill, I will have to find another.
Garrett Owens –
I love the pen…but not the plastic insert which has stripped out and made the pen, pretty much, useless. It makes me want to shy away from Zebra.
I also have a Zebra Mini that I LOVE, but I like having a steel full-sized all of the time
Jon –
I too have found that I am unable to use this pen for more than about a week before the ink starts skipping. This problem happens also with the refills. Sounds like this is a common problem and I am not sure if there is a way to address this problem, if so I would be interested in hearing from the Zebra, if not then they should really discontinue this pen altogether.
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Jon. Sorry you are dissatisfied with your recent purchase. Please fill out the contact form at https://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch with you shortly.
Rich D –
The Zebra F-402 has been my go-to pen for almost a decade. I like the way it looks, and the rubber grip. I too have the same issues with the pens that others have: The barrel cracks where the cone threads into it, the clip rusts, and the stainless steel sleeve slips down the barrel into the grip. The rusty clip just shows long-time usage of a pen that’s “ridden hard and put away wet”. I don’t mind that much. For the spitting barrel at the threads of the cone, I just wrap the barrel with Kapton tape (cellophane tape stretches too much to last). The big unrecoverable issue is the sleeve sliding down into the grip. It just happens if you click the pen too much. I’ve tried Crazy-gluing the sleeve to the barrel, but the fix won’t last. It’s the primary reason I buy more pens. I think I’ll try a 7-series pen next.
Kenneth Beverly –
I love the F402 but like others have commented I do not like the refills! Please, please, please go back to the original. Despite, the refill problems this pen is still 5 stars. I love the weight of this pen. It’s a must have pen for all lefties!!!
Frank Gerhart –
Love the F-402 it has been my favorite but the refills are unpredictable. Some run till completely out of ink, unfortunately many have started skipping while displaying plenty of ink.
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Frank. We are sorry to hear that! Zebra prides itself on high quality standards. Please fill out the contact form at https://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch with you shortly. Thank you.
luciano –
been drawing with this pen for years!! love the glide and how you can get thin lines to thick lines by slight pressure! best drawing bp!
Justin –
Refill packs for the F402 do not write smooth. They are good until you use about 1/4 of the refill. Then it starts to go out on you and does not write smooth anymore as if the ink has hardened up and will not flow. I have bought over 4 packs thinking it was just a fluke but all 4 refill packs did the exact same thing. Did not even get half way through the refill and it started acting up on me. Already contacted customer support but got no response. It’s sad because I Love this pen it writes nice but the refills do not last.
Gene –
I purchased a two pack and while one works great the ink in the second on was not sealed. It migrated to the top and out of the cartridge. While it did not make a mess it made a failure rate of fifty percent of the pens I purchased.
Michael Wacewicz –

Jon Bartlett –
The only pen I use – I’d give it all five stars were it not for one problem – the cone threads break and so the cone comes off. I took a pic of six 502’s I’ve owned in which this has happened (but I can’t find a way to mail it to you!).I can’t see if the sheath the threads lie into is plastic or metal, so I can’t see why it happens.
Dian –
I love my F402 Pen, but how do you open it for a refill? I have tried everything I can think of and still can’t get it open. Suggestions??
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Dian. To open the F-402, just twist the cone of the pen and you can open it to switch refills.
Christian Artley –
This is an absolutely amazing pen for the time that is lasts, it writes deadly smooth and feels just right in both weight and length. However, I find that after about a week or so, they just stop working. In regards to ink flow, despite the ink cartridge being full, the ink flow begins to get rough and then just stop all together, and very suddenly. Again, big disappointment considering the duration and life of the pen, hence my rating. In my opinion, no pen is worth anything if it doesn’t write!
Jacob –
I’ve been using the F-402 for years, and honestly its one of my favorite pens. i still have a few where the logo is located on the side, which in my opinion has a better look to it. My biggest problem is the fact that the issue with the main steel barrel has yet to be fixed. It tends to slip down and reveals the plastic under the barrel which has a type of lubricant, my guess is that its used to slip it on in the first place. When yo notice that its begun to slip just trying to force it back up isn’t easy, considering the finish of the barrel and the small space to grab purchase of. one more thing is the clip, they always seem to rust. Don’t get me wrong its a good pen with a positive feel to it and an actuator that rises even when the pen is in use and doest move back and forth when you tilt your hand.
Lawrence (verified owner) –
I just bought a set, and after arriving home I used one for the first time.I was very impressed considering the price, it’s very well made and has a good feel while writing so I had to go on line and purchase the 301 series both in black and blue and plenty of refills for both my F 402 series and seen there was blue also so I ordered F 402 blue
fruitypuffs –
It’s a bit heavy so if you like heavy pens, get it. Otherwise, it’s kind of your average pen. I don’t really see anything special about it. I just really like the steel writing utensils but I don’t like it heavy.
Terry –
I would definitely give this a 5 as I’ve been using it for quite some time
Michael Wacewicz –
Thanks for your feedback! We are so happy you like our pens
Terry –
I love this pen!!!! I’m a nurse who writes many okay tons of notes. The only thing is I’m not able to find the F-402 refill. From what I understand they say that the F 301 is compatible however I tried it and was not satisfied. It’s like it kept skipping when I was writing.
Michael Wacewicz –
Hi Terry. We are so happy you like our pens. Our F-402 uses our F-refill, which fits in with any of our steel ballpoint pens. They are available on our web in 0.7mm, 1.0mm, and 1.6mm point sizes.
bob –
Good pen but after using a week the steel started sliding down pen which pushed off rubber off. Bought another set and the exact same thing happened. going back to the F-301.
Hap –
This has been my “go to” pen for many years. Can’t find a nicer ballpoint, and I’ve tried.
Logan –
I like the pen but hate the ink not very smooth and wright worse than a bic
Dan –
I absolutely love this pen. I don’t use any other pen. Every other pen I use feel clunky and cheap to me while this feels like it’s a top notch quality pen. I live in Thailand so I really miss these pens. I can’t find them here at all. If I did, I would definitely buy the store out. Can’t go wrong with these pens. They never blot, never cease writing, and never fail. Great design. Excellent comfort. Just an all around great pen.
Hugh O’Steen –
I’ve been using this pen for years and before that I used the F301. Both pens are great. The F402 has a nice solid feel and write very smooth. I get compliments every time someone else uses it.
Kirby Tennent –
As a lefty this pen is a godsend. I have been using it consistently for years.
I never have to worry about smudges when writing long notes. The fine tip pen makes it easy to see what my sometimes close together and sloppy handwriting should be. The pen is comfortable for long periods of writing and I don’t recall ever having a pen stop writing before it ran out of ink.
Great pen. Buy one. Buy Ten.
Tom Hurley –
This is a fine pen. It has the right amount of weight, and writing ability. Its a solidly built pen. For grippy-ness and comfort this pen is awesome! Unfortunately this pen’s greatest attributes is also its worst. The grippy-ness of the rubber grip area always causes it to get hung up in my pocket and(most times) I have to use two hands to get the pen out of the pocket. If the pen were offered with a medium point cartridge that would be another added star. However, if you like a fine point and plan to never put it inside anything, then its a 5 star pen no doubt. I will recommend this pen regardless of flaws because its a Zebra.
