The Toughest Pen Around

The X-701 is as tough as they come. With a patent pending pressurized barrel, ability to write in harsh weather conditions, and durable, stainless steel barrel, this will quickly become your go-to every day carry pen.

  • Durable, light weight, stainless steel barrel
  • Anti-reflective matte black finish
  • Patent Pending Pressurized barrel allowing the pen to write on challenging surfaces (extreme angles, upside down) and temperatures ranging from -30 degrees F to 250 degrees F
  • Convenient lanyard loop making it easily attachable to a belt loop, backpack, or climbing gear.
  • Military Grade Drop Tested
  • 5x more durable than everyday plastic pens
  • Refillable with K-refill

The X-701 features a patent pending pressurized barrel, allowing the pen to write upside down and at extreme levels. The X-701’s pressurized barrel is what makes this product unique. Using this refill in other standard pens will not have the same pressurized results.

Due to the pressurized barrel mechanism, some ink blobbing may occur when the pen is left retracted for an extended period of time.

I love The pen it’s my go to pen at work. And it’s a pretty tough pen i drop It and beat the crap out of it still clips on tight to my shirt. Now if your looking for a nice pen where the paint doesn’t flake off then this paint for you there are plenty of other. Models that will look nice and pretty on your shirt or desk but this one is not for that it’s a grunt pen with nice smooth ink i love it no problems here good job guys

I thought this was going to be a heavy duty pen. It feels like a cheap plastic pen. The black coating is coming off the brass tip and steel clip. The clip is the only part that us actually steel. Very unhappy.

The pen started off amazing, but it quickly turned into a crappy pen. It doesn’t write smooth anymore, instead the letters are broken up between clearly visible to just in dented lines. I write tiny, so when the pin was new, it was awesome. But now all sizes of letters no matter whether I write tiny letters, or normal size on documents for work, it doesn’t write well and I find myself constantly having to switch back to my other pens I carry in my pockets I write tiny, so when the pin was new, it was awesome. While I like the action of the clicker, I wish that the pen had a medium point but that’s a personal choice. I am extremely upset over the fact that the black coating has already started to wear off (rub off) around the tip of the pen where the ballpoint protrudes. FOr $14.99 I would have hopes that the finish would last a lot longer than a couple months. I ordered this direct from Zebra online too.

It’s a good pen. Yes it’s not totally metal and yes the black costing comes off pretty easily, but that doesn’t take away from the pens over all quality. The thing that gets me is the quality of the ink. It claims to be an “extreme” pen…. I work in a 28-32 degree warehouse and I have run into issues of the ink not flowing nicely when writing. Maybe it’s just me.

One of the best pens so far. Its light weight and writes easily in the Rite In The Rain products. I don’t like that the black wore off the barrel so easily. Now it just looks weird. One improvement I could mention for the next gen, a pressurized (space pen) type of ink cartridge.

I carry two pens – an f701 and more recently an x701. In my opinion the price is fair for such a nice pen. Oh and yes it has some plastic parts so if you’re looking for an all metal pen you need to consider an f701. What I like about the new x includes the perfect grip and weight. It writes smooth and clear with the stock refill which has a fine point. I’m happy to see the refills are finally becoming available. I give this pen five stars.

Great writing pen. It’s my favorite pen by far. My biggest issue is the finish. My once black pen is now two tone silver and black. Half the finish is gone after 3 months of office use.

Can you please get blue ink for this pen? Then I would consider purchasing 2 of them. I’m a blue ink person. Thank you.

Huge departure from the 701 line. More plastic and no steel. Don’t waste your money on this pen. It’s no longer a (1) piece steel barrel. Plastic knurling mid, ridiculously thin aluminum shaft, plastic clicker, brass pen end. Feels cheap. The plastic lanyard loop is cute… and pointless. Not sure what “Military Drop Test” they did, possibly the Cub Scout Drop Test. Either way it’s a no go.

Really upset about the quality of this pen. When it was released, I jumped all over it thinking it was going to be a “tactical” version of the 701. BOY was I wrong. This thing is half plastic. Has NO weight to it and the ink bleeds out of the pressurized refill.
Zebra had a monster opportunity to get into the “tactical” EDC game and failed. It may take some time to get here, same went for the F-701. Took a while to get to where the customers wanted out of the product.

Works great and is tough. It’s also the best color around (black, of course.). Worth the money. However, don’t buy this if you lose pens all the time – stick with disposable. 15 is a bit spendy. The advantage is that you will only have to replace the ink refill rather than the whole pen. Great job, Zebra!

I love the pen and everything about it except the clicker on the top. The pen is made of nice materials and matte black plastic but the clicker is very cheap gloss black – huge disappointment. If Zebra just made it out of the same plastic as the grip section, this would be easily a 5 star product.

Had this pen for 3 days. It broke. Clicker isn’t working. I contacted Zebra waiting to hear back.

This pen is one of my favorites. I am also an active college student that is studying culinary arts, baking and confections & hospitality management, and this pen is used in the kitchen environment. It has withstood notes with wet doughy hands and stainless steel tables. The reason for minus one star, is the hook broke off my pen, as I use a NiteIze product to attach it to my belt loop. The pen still worked once I found it.

This pen writes smooth and doesn’t smudge.

If the loop was reinforced, this pen definitely gets more than 5 stars.

Overall it’s a decent pen, what I’m not happy about is the black is chipping off with no problem.

This pen looks great but does not deserve the 701 name. The true 701 is fully metal from tip to end. Is solid in construction and pretty much invincible. This one is metal barreled but has a plastic screwed in front grip just like the less 301 zebra pen models. I am disappointed. All I want is a black colored reguslr 701 and I would be happy. Please Zebra make this happen

Is the grip made of plastic?

    • Zebra Support

Yes, this pen features a plastic grip while having a stainless steel barrel similar to other products in our stainless steel line.

This is my favorite pen to use! I am a very active and busy college student who is always on the go, traveling all over. The pressurized barrel mechanism is very unique, something I have never seen before. I took this pen with me while I was on a hike and it withstood quite extreme conditions such as rain and cold. It is a very tough pen and I love being able to attach it to my backpack and other gear. Not only does it work great is also looks really cool.

While this pen is very comfortable in my hand and I do enjoy writing with it, the matte black finish has been chipping off since about the second week of carrying the pen in my pants pocket each day.

Pen seemed good at first but black coating isn’t very durable. Looks rugged but isn’t. Eventually you’ll end up with a silver pen with brass tip and black grip and clicker as finish wears off because grip and clicker are black plastic.
