69 reviews for F-301 Ballpoint Retractable Pen

  1. 5 out of 5

In that off chance I need to buy pens I usually go for the .7 blue-ink 301… It’s a fun pen to write with. I don’t work for zebra and this is the first time I’ve ever reviewed a product in my life. 5/5

  2. 5 out of 5

Just bought a pair of these at Fry’s Foods (Kroger). Have been using the F-402 which is considerably heavier. Good work pen.

  3. 5 out of 5

It is pure pleasure to use these pens and to write a review of them. I consider these to be the best pens on the market. They are certainly the best, most reliable pens I have ever used. It is hard to find the F-301 in my local stores as the Z-Grip seems to be preferred by purchasing managers (which is still a very nice pen). It is good to know that I can get the F-301 directly.

  4. 5 out of 5

Also don’t usually review products… but I love these. For really tiny handwriting like mine it keeps it legible. Thicker pens drag on the page and then noone can read a thing I write (this sometimes includes myself! lol)

BTW.. I bought the keychain-pen (F301-Compact) in like 2008 and I keep it with my keys… Since then I have literally never been without a perfectly functioning pen…and seeing as it disattaches and I’d lose me head if it wasn’t attached..I cant believe it’s still attached (And works! ink still in it!) Just saying..I could be the Zebra Spokesperson 🙂

  5. 5 out of 5

These are without doubt or hesitation, the best pens on the market. Because of their smoothness, my penmanship is beautiful. I enjoy going back to my notes and seeing my handwriting. I know it sounds silly but I do.

Recently, I bought some off-market refills by the name of “Penatia Zebra Refills” that I found on eBay. What pieces of Chinese crap. Don’t fall for the same mistake. Just buy the real thing. BJ’s Warehouse has good deals on these pens, in fact I think I’ll go now and buy some more!

I usually dont review many products but i feel this one deserved it! The F-301(bp) is the only pen i ever use now since i discoverd it by accident when someone left it at my desk.I only wish they made more colors besides the red, black and blue.
I once found a variety pack that had all the colors mentioned plus a green one.. I cant seem to find it anywhere. maybe one day they will read this and make some.. I only use the F-301(bp and have not tried any of the other zebra pens…

  7. 5 out of 5

I also want the green pen but cannot locate it on line. I like the four pack so bought several of them at Staples, which included the green; yet no refills available. I have used the gel for years but now have gone back to my original Zebra which is so much easier to use and does not bleed through my planner pages. Awesome!!

  8. 5 out of 5

I love the Zebra pens. They write well, and the colors are solid. I wish I could get refills for the green and black pens.

  9. 5 out of 5

I am an engineer and work in manufacturing facilities. Tough environments for a pen. I came across this brand and have used it exclusively. Always gets the job done. I dropped, bent and even washed these pens and they still work. Simply a great product.

  10. 5 out of 5

Again I go back to staples and buy a zebra pen. This zebra pen has an amazing fine tip which is so fine and yet perfectly smooth to write with.. Not to mention its amazing looks and feel. I really prefer the lightness of this pen to anything else I’ve tried. Its solid metal and hard plastic make it feel amazing in your hand, and confident in your writing. I just bought the 4 color variety pack at staples and am amazed at how well the tip and ink work. The thinness is really a plus due to the small amount of ink that comes out, making bolding words, note doodles, or a drawing, a dream because of how it shades deeper after a second, third, pass over. So they look good, run good, feel good, are good… Im not sure ill buy a different pen.. ever. That being said, the body of the pen is slightly shorter than the average pen (which I prefer) meaning it will hold less ink per cartridge. I didn’t mind. I also had never used the same pen for so long (made sure I never lost it) Once I got used to buying cartridges, I didn’t look back. No matter how you write it, this is a great great GREAT pen. And I couldn’t be happier. Thanks Zebra.

I have had issues with the 301 pen. They only last about 2 weeks then stop writing. I have email the corporate office at least 4 times with no response. I guess they just don’t care about customer service

I have had issues with the 301 pens. I use them for about 2 weeks and then they stop writing. I have sent 4 emails to there customer service, and never have gotten any response.

These pens write wonderfully for about a month. I can’t even use mine anymore because it doesn’t write. The ink flow cuts in and out all the time. I an really disappointed because they work so great in the beginning, but then it stops working!

Hey Hailey, so sorry you’re experiencing problems with the F-301! Please contact our customer service team explaining the situation and we would be more than happy to send replacement refills for your order!

The f301 is the most underrated pen I tell you. The one pen that forces me to leave Parker Jotter (I admit Jotter looks better) in th drawer because of its comfort and nice line it produces. And I can write long due to its lightness and plastic grip as compared to Jotter which feels good but cannot use for longer periods. I only use f301 mostly in fine tip and sometimes medium and bold tip. Just need to marker green color more (so I don’t have to go on ebay and such) and introduce a new color like maybe aquamarine color?

These never fail. I have used these for years and don’t any others.

  16. 2 out of 5

I really love these pens, and I always bought the black ink and never had any problems. I recently bought a two pack of blue ink pens and they don’t write- well only when they want to. I was pretty disappointed, when I found this out while taking notes in class.

  17. 1 out of 5

F-301 Pens are great — but’s whats up with not being able to locate F-Refills in red ink. You make the pen in red but don’t carry the refills on your website and I can’t find them on any other site

  18. 1 out of 5

I thought I am the only one who got unlucky and probably got two defected pens in one package. First one was not working at all from the beginning, and the second one was working for about 3-4days and the ink does break between writing. Lots of issue. Really disappointed by this product

As a nurse, I do a tremendous amount of writing on a daily basis and I have tried virtually every pen on the market. Nothing beats the F301, especially the 1.6MM Bold tip. I write with a heavy hand and other pens end up shredding the paper I’m writing on. I buy these in bulk from Amazon. I just wish I could buy replacement certridges in bulk as well because the ink runs out long before the pen itself breaks down.

  20. 5 out of 5

These pens never skip and have the smoothest ink flow of all my pens in my collection (Jotter, IM Rollerball, and Signo 207). It would have been much better if the F-301 models had a rubber grip like the F301 Ultra.

  21. 5 out of 5

I love the F-301 pen!!!! The only problem that I have is that the stores that I go to have a limited amount of BLUE pens, they have plenty of black ink pens. I DO NOT LIKE black ink!!! Also, they do not have any of the blue ink refills. I decided today to check your website and I’m very happy to purchase the BLUE INK refills. Please make a 24 pack BLUE INK F-301 pens 🙂 Thank you for making these pens 🙂

  22. 5 out of 5

Easily the most consistent and reliable pen you can buy today. Also, the seem to write on anything, so I always try to keep one with me.

  23. 4 out of 5

I have used the F-301 0.7 mm point for years and have yet to find a better “go to” pen. I love the fact that its body is metal, and it is always consistently reliable. There is little room for improvement, but I think a few things could make this pen near perfect: 1. I tend to click my pens a lot and sometimes the clicker button falls off. I would like it if that wouldn’t happen because sometimes I can’t find it. 2. I think it’d be nice to have more color choices for the grip on the body. 3. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, it would be awesome if the ink was a little darker (like hybrid ink), but where it wouldn’t compromise the performance and become globby. I have used the 1.6 mm tip and enjoy the dark ink, but it tends to glob a lot and leaves a mess on the paper sometimes. With all that said, this is a great pen, especially the 0.7 mm point, and I haven’t found anything better yet. It is great for writing as well as drawing (great shading with it). You really can’t go wrong.

I LOVE THIS PEN SO MUCH!!! It rights very well.

  25. 5 out of 5

This is my favorite pen; comfortable, compact, no-worry performance, etc. The only problem is that everyone else tries to swipe it from me!

  26. 5 out of 5

I think they’re great. I have had this same pen for five years. It has traveled with me to the depths of Tartarus.

  27. 5 out of 5

The pen does its job, simple as that. It’s easy to hold, and doesn’t cramp me up after extended use. I occasionally go a few weeks without using it, but it doesn’t dry up and is easy to use again after that time. I’m very please and would recommend this product to anyone.

  28. 2 out of 5

I like the way the pen writes, my only problem with the f301 is the plastic barrel, the threads always seem to break off with half the ink still in the pen, I just toss itand buy a new one.

  29. 5 out of 5

I do a lot of reading and these pens are the best I have ever found for notation in research. They are a dream to writing with. My only complaint is that it is hard to find red refills over the counter. You can only get a red pen with the purchase of a 4 pack. I have to buy a 4 pack (2 black, 1blue, and 1 red just to get a red pen. Of course I use the black as my standard legal pen, but why is it so hard to find red fills?

  30. 2 out of 5

This pen is great for its fine point and durability, but for writing, the ink goes in and out. I constantly find myself needing to rewrite what I just wrote down due to the ink not coming out consistently. Now I know why pens advertise “smoothness” when writing. This pen does not write smooth!

  31. 5 out of 5

Looking at Jackie’s comment I would have to agree. This pen has very little for improvement. After 9 years in the military I refuse to pick up another pen. I have found, in my current profession, that the 301 holds strong and true. The flow of the ink is smooth, there is no mess or smudge, and I have yet to have a refill fail on me. The button coming loose is a minor annoyance but can easily be over looked. In fact, I just purchased an order of refills for my entire department because we all swear by Zebra’s 301. I can’t wait to get the nerve to try the 701!!!! Keep up the good work Zebra. 5 stars for certain.

  32. 1 out of 5

I use to buy only the F-301 (about 3 dozen a year for the office), was the best pen ever. Now (the last 2 years) every one of them start to leak and gum up the mechanism, which makes them useless. If they were as good as they once were I,d pay $10 for one if that’s what they cost, but now there not worth Sh-t.

I thought I got lucky today when I ran across this ZEBRA website. Growing up pre-internet, I sometimes forget the benefits of the WWW. While I did not find what I needed, I have finally learned the answer to a decades old problem.

I will say that I have been buying ZEBRA products since I first purchased the F-301 4 color set when I was in college. I still have that set and it is still one of my favorites. I have been a fan ever since.
ZEBRA was the brand of choice when I needed to purchase school supplies for the classroom. They are still a favorite brand decades later.

I have always liked the F-301 pens, their design and sturdy construction. However, I have spent a good deal of time over the years thinking, sooner or later, I would find the refills in all 4 colors. Today I learned why I have not been able to find them, the F-301 refills are ONLY available in blue & black. These pens are sold as”refillable”, so I can’t understand why Zebra does not make red and green refills.
I am sure there is a reason that makes sense to ZEBRA but, it makes no sense to the people that can not refill their pens. I think ZEBRA has done a disservice to any customer that bought the set because they needed all 4 colors for specific reasons..
I am sure I am not the only buyer that felt a little “deceived” after buying a refillable, 4 color, pen set that isn’t actually refillable.

While hoping to find the red and green refills, I finally decided to try a different approach. I purchased another brand of retractable pen with the “stick” type refills. It will need to have the spring on the front with the small protrusions that stops the spring from moving back. Cut off the end of the stick/cartridge a bit longer than the ZEBRA refill length. The smaller diameter fits into the “click” button, so a little extra length is needed to reach the end of it. You might want to cut longer, then cut a little at a time until it is a good fit. When you insert the stick into the pen, and reassemble the f-301, the stick should slide into the cap and you’re all set.

While this is a way to get around the problem, one shouldn’t have to purchase and rely on another brand to refill the ZEBRA F-301. This is extra waste when you need to buy a pen just to remove the ink cartridge. When I see ZEBRA spending so much money to advertise products to encouraging buyers to “go green”, “protect the environment” or “buy eco”, I am confused.

ZEBRA still sells the F-301 4 color “REILLABLE” set. In my search for refills, reviews I have read a lot of reviews… many buyers are frustrated when they learn that they can only buy refills for half of the “set”.
In the very least, ZEBRA should indicate clearly on the 4 color set packaging that refills are ONLY AVAILABLE for the blue and black pens.

As I said, I have many ZEBRA products; ball point pens, fountain pens, gel pens and mechanical pencils. I find ZEBRA products to be reliable and durable products.
I love the G-301 Gel Pens, which are designed like the F-301 ball point pens. The ZEBRA roller ball pens are wonderful. The colors available for the SARASA Gel pens are lovely, they are smooth and fun to work with.
I do a lot of designing and drawing, so always have ZEBRA mechanical pencils in every lead size nearby. Finally, for those who prefer ballpoint over gel ink and prefer a bold line, I recommend the Z-Grip Flight over the Z-Grip. The ink is very smooth and they come in fun colors !

My first F-301 was perfect. Even after being run over, it kept writing; so i started buying them. However, two of my recent pens have simply broken off where the plastic grip meets the steel tube. Maybe Zebra changed manufacturing parameters. In any case, Zebra’s warranty requires return postage (almost the cost of the pen) or an online discount. Neither option fits well with a superior pen manufacturer.

  35. 1 out of 5

When I originally starting using the F-301 (7MM) 10 years ago, it performed GREAT! Now, the pen and refills are totally inconsistent within 2 weeks of purchase. The ink skips and does not leave an even flow. By the time I finish making an entry in my flight log, it looks as if the ink is drying up. Did someone switch suppliers and ink formula?

Love, love, love this pen. I can’t imagine anyone having a problem with it. I believe whomever has experience any sort of problem with it, must have bought a knock off somewhere. There are so many praises sung within these reviews that all I have to say is Here! Here! I’m in perfect agreement with all of you who love this pen. Thank you Zebra…word of caution… please never stop making this pen, you might have a stampeed of unhappy customers! Truly top of the line without spending a fortune.

  37. 4 out of 5

The Zebra F-301 is a great pen, and Zebra customer service has been great when I’ve had defective refills. HOWEVER, like others, I wish Zebra would have RED refills available in the .7mm point. My go-to red pen is about out of ink, and buying a whole new F-301 red pen just for a simple refill is against environmental principles. Zebra, don’t let us frequent users and devotees down!

  38. 5 out of 5

Please tell me if I buy Zebra F-301 0.7 mm Fine point pen, can I use 1.0 mm Medium point refill for it?

    • Sure! Any of our F-refills with the F-301 ballpoint pen. They are available in 0.7mm, 1.0mm, and 1.6mm point size.

  39. 4 out of 5

Really like the 301. Having said that, I don’t care for the plastic (threaded) barrel. Didn’t see any reviews on the 701, does it also have the plastic threaded barrel or is it solid metal? I carry mine in my work apron and it outlasts plastic pens by far but they do break at the plastic. Is the 701 any larger in the grip? Again greatest pen I’ve ever used and will continue to purchase them as they break but would prefer completely metal barrel.

    • Hi Ron. We’re glad you like our F-301. The F-701 is a little longer and heavier than the F-301, and it has a knurled metal grip. The f-701 is all metal, with the exception of the plunger mechanism and refill. Watch this space for future product updates!

  40. 5 out of 5

I’ve been using the Zebra pens for years. Unfortunately, I only like blue ink so your company should make more pens with blue ink. But, lately I’ve been unable to find green pens but even your website states you have green ink refills but when you go to purchase a pen it’s only showing black, blue and red. I think if your not going to have it readily available then someone needs to review the pens and refills. Also, where can I get a F401 pen everyone keeps talking about. I have the F301’s and the F701 but would really like to try a F401 with blue ink.

    • Hi Shelly. We’re so happy you like our F-301 ballpoint pens. The F-402 is available on our web as well, in both blue and black and takes any of our F-refills. Thanks!

  41. 4 out of 5

This is kind of your average pen. There’s nothing special about it but I do like the steel barrel.

  42. 3 out of 5

I have used F-301 pens for years because they would write on my 3×5 cards over my handling of the cards. However, for the past year, the F-301 has stopped writing well on my cards and papers. You are about to lose a good customer if this continues with the new pair of F-301’s I just purchased at Wal-Mart. If they skip and do not write well, I will not use them. I suspect the plastic filler pens in the new ones as representative of the poor performance I have experienced.
Wal-Mart has ceased to carry refills, and I no longer trust them anyway. I write a lot, and want the reliability of a pen I always have in my shirt pocket.

  43. 3 out of 5

I purchased four of the F-301 pens based on recommendations of coworkers, and I really like the way that they write. However, within three days of having the pens in the field, two of the top click caps have fallen off and gone missing. Without these caps, the pens are useless. Having a reliable pen is critical for my job. I am disappointed that I cannot trust these pens as my primary writing source.

  44. 2 out of 5

I have used the F-301 .07 pens for the past 7 years and I loved them up until recently. The past pack and 2 packs of refills have been sub par. Through those 6 ink cartridges they all began to write intermittently. Like I said I used to love them but, the quality isn’t there anymore so I have to look for something different.

  45. 2 out of 5

I am having the same ink issues as a lot of the people above. I like the F-301 but I find that the ink flow is very inconsistent – it keeps skipping. This is very unfortunate when doing fine work or small writing. It seems that the quality of the pens have deteriorated.

  46. 3 out of 5

I too love the Zebra F-301 and F-402 pens. I too am extremely unhappy that refills are not available in red and green. I also notice that most of the comments here have responses from customer service, but that questions about red and green refills seem always to be ingnored with no answer. Wonder why that is.

  47. 5 out of 5

The only pen I actually enjoy with the exception of the UniBall Jetstream. This pen for fine point and is the bet while the Jetstream for a more fluid write. Only blue for me though.

  48. 2 out of 5

I have been using this pen for a several years, but recently very disappointed. I buy these in 12 packs and take them everywhere with me. I literally do not write with any other pen and I’ve been through a lot. But they suddenly just STOP WRITING. Out of NOWHERE. I have been saving all of these pens and now I have a total of 6 pens which have ink in them, but they just don’t write. This is unacceptable for the price you pay for these. I don’t want an apology letter, fix the problem and replace these pens please! I was forced to write with other pens because I need a product that is reliable. If you are manufacturing a pen, it should write until the ink runs out. No exceptions. And only 2 pens for the past 4 years have done that. NOT GOOD!!

If you write with these pens the way I do, you will notice the same issue.

  49. 3 out of 5

I have finally found a pen that can take a beating…almost. I work for an airline and a shipping company so my pens take a beating daily. I opted for the sleek metal F-301 1.6MM. There is a lot to like about this pen but the only thing I don’t like is that the “grip” area is made of of plastic. The issue with the plastic material is the threads either strip or the plastic cracks near the threads that connect to the metal body leaving the pen broken and unusable. Ive been using these pens for almost a year now and I have broken at more than a dozen. Any plans to make this pen completely made out of metal??

  50. 1 out of 5

I bought a package of 2 301A pens. I was so excited to find a refillable pen! I have had them for less than 2 weeks and both pens are dry as a bone, and skipping before that. I am upset. The site does not offer a way to contact customer service. Am I suppose to write a letter?

I have used this pen for many years and now I would like this pen in green ink. How do I get it shipped to Canada (or where can I order from in Canada?) Also, no refills in red or green?????? What’s with that?

  54. 5 out of 5

I love these pens. Been using them for years. They are practically indestructible. I’ve had them dropped in a deep fry, run over by a dune-buggy, on concrete, and they still worked as if nothing happened. They even work within a freezer and write upside down with no issues.

Keep up the good work Zebra.

I have used these pens for 20 years. Recently had trouble with 6+ that I bought at different times in different colors where the ink flow was interrupted and made them useless and frustrating to write with. Contacted the company through this web site to complain, politely, and haven’t heard a thing. I found online others with similar experiences who have done micro-engineering fixes as a work around. No thanks. I don’t want to jump ship but I want a pen that writes.

I bought these because other paramedics that I work with recommended them as tough, durable pens that also work well with our tablets. For about a week they were awesome, but then the ink quit flowing so I opened a new pack, thinking it was a fluke, and the same thing happened. I’m disappointed because I love the gold color and feel of the pen.

    • Hi Melissa. We are sorry to hear that! Zebra prides itself on high quality standards. Please fill out the contact form at http://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch with you shortly. Thank you.

I purchased two, 9 pack F 301 from Sam’s. Love the pen, but the ink stops writing. This is very disappointing.
    Thank you.

I used to be an avid Zebra pen user, however, a 2-pack I bought recently has proven to be absolutely useless. I like a constant nice flow of ink, but these go in and out of ink every time I use them. Not sure if I want to risk it by buying them again.

    • Hi Kat. Please fill out the contact form at http://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch with you shortly. Thank you.

I love this pen. But need to know just one thing. Is the point made from tungsten? I current work in an environment that does not allow for tungsten point pens and want to make sure im not breaking rules if i use this one while working

  61. 1 out of 5

I also liked the style and feel of the pen. I bought a package, Staples I think, each dried up after a couple of weeks. Mind you, the only writing I do is a weekly shopping list and a few checks a month. Is someone forgetting to completely fill the cartridges? Such a waste!

  62. 1 out of 5

F-301…I am extremely disappointed in the pens lately. When I first started buying them, I could write until it ran out of ink without any issues. Was my favorite type of pen…Now…I buy one and after 3 or 4 days, the ink starts skipping and I have ruined a few documents just trying to sign my signature and it looks extremely unprofessional. What is going on with the quality control?

    • Hi Richard, we are sorry you are dissatisfied with your recent purchase. Please fill out the contact form at http://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch with you shortly.

I love these pens for journaling and writing notes during talks. My only big complaint is that the ink is noticeably lighter than other black ballpoint pens I own. The Moleskine Pens are horrible in quality but the ink is much blacker than these Zebra ones.

Hoping they’ll come out with an improvement for the darkness of the ink (right now it’s like a blue-ish grey) and release them as refills!

  64. 5 out of 5

A simply amazing pen. I have not had much experience with these because my friends keep stealing these! But there is a couple problems: If you wash these, they turn brown and smell horrible. (Not rust) And the next problem: Testing durability by hitting kind of breaks the plastic after around 20 or so hits, but maybe if you see this Zebra, you could make an all steel 301? I can’t find 401s or 701s so I trust these.

I really wish Zebra would go back to the formula they used a few years ago. The F-301 was unbeatable. It would write anywhere and on anything. The last few packs I have bought write when they want to and thats it. I have resorted to keeping a different brand of pen handy for when the Zebra gets in a bad mood and decides to stop. It is an excellent pen when it works, but when these run out of ink, I am done with them until they change back. It isnt worth it to keep extra pens handy just because you can’t trust the pen you want.

    • Hi Chris, sorry you are dissatisfied with your F-301. Zebra prides itself on high quality standards. Please fill out the contact form at http://www.zebrapen.com/contact-us/ and a customer service representative will be in touch shortly. Thank you!

I like the way they feel and write, but that plastic part of the barrel is unreliable. I’ve had two of them break in the last couple weeks. One of them was almost out of ink, but the other was still mostly unused.

I am extremely pleased with all your products. Especially the 301 1.6mm bold black and also the 301 mechanical pencil.. They operate flawlessly every time. The ink is consistant. They fit in every folder and attache case. And they look professional. I have also purchased the 301 in blue, green and red. Once again they are excellent. Thank you for the bold.

    • Thanks for the great feedback, George! Have you tried our 402 or 701 series?

I have been using the F-301 Fine Point Black Pen for years. Recently the ink flow is inconsistent after about two weeks of use. Any suggestions? I really do not want to look for another brand. I can say this pen was rated a five star but has slipped to a one star.

    • Hi Al. Thank you for your feedback! We are sorry you have had issues with the F-301 skipping. Our product development team is looking into this. Please fill out the contact form on our site and a customer service rep will be in touch with you soon to get this issue resolved. Thank you.

I have been using the Zebra F-301 pens since around 2003. For the price, they are worth every penny! In customer service, a reliable and long lasting pen can be hard to come by. Zebra has provided that for me. A lot of my customers ask about them and thank me for introducing them to them. I love my f-301 pens so much, that I go as far as to put a black ink cartridge in one of there red pens to make sure people know it is mine. Thank you for keeping the F-301’s around so long.
